Failure: Ingredient for depression or Opportunity to excel?

Recently, a friend of mine got his MHT-CET marks, and he got around 140-150, making it pretty impossible for him to get into a good government medical college (He was trying for medicine). His parents decided to let him take a year's drop to prepare again. Although a little confused and frustrated for a couple of weeks, he decided to join a coaching centre in the repeater's batch.

This incident raised the question about failure in my mind. Some people look at it as another chance given to them to prove their true mettle. Others compromise with other options available to them. And some others take the extreme step and go into drugs or in extreme cases even suicide.

So what is the deal with failure anyway?

I believe that if one has failed, it is pretty unfortunate. The reasons could be inability to focus on a particular aspect of the educational curriculum or some other important engagement. Although slightly demeaning from the society's point of view (let's face it, society always always criticizes a person who has either failed or taken a year's drop) ; a year's drop to put complete focus on academics can be indeed helpful in the long run.

If one has failed, the failure must be looked at as a new opportunity to do better next time, to cover the shortcomings and work on particular weak points. Well, as the clichéd saying goes, failures are the stepping stones to success.

Think about it. Don't long jumpers take a few steps back to jump forward? Doesn't the archer pull the arrow back before releasing it? It is an open secret that successful people don't achieve success overnight. They have to overcome criticisms, obstacles and their own failures before they become who they are. Man is imperfect, so he often stumbles in life. Misfortunes try him, just as fire tries gold. Failures are unpleasant, but ultimately they are our best instructors.

A failure must be looked as an opportunity to work on your weakness and strive hard to do better the next time. Especially for those who give competitive examination after their 12th, a year's drop should be taken as a chance to focus on the syllabus for the competitive exams.

Oh and all this does not mean that if a person takes a drop he/she get depressed or distracted by the sight of other people who have got into their colleges. Remember, there shall be no time for any distractions if one genuinely wants to do well the next year. Hard work and complete dedication should occupy the complete focus of the person.

"I haven't failed. I have just found 10,000 ways which don't work " - Thomas Alva Edison.

If you've hit rock bottom, it all depends on how high you bounce back. As Tom Krause said, "There are no failures, just experiences and your reactions to them." Every time we fail, we gain experience and learn some lesson, mainly the reason for our failure in the first place. And invariably we guard ourselves from repeating the same mistakes in the next attempt.

So, to all those people who are taking a drop this year, All the best for the next. And do not be disheartened. Look upon this year as a bonus to study properly for the coming year. And this year, the focus on academics should come before anything else.
